Chapter 12. Summary

Inadequate timing may produce problems in any digital network. Five questions need to be answered:

Where and what are the network's source, or sources of timing?

What will happen if there are slips?

Are slips a problem today?

What future network growth is planned, and will errors due to slips be an increasing problem?

Will new equipment force a redesign of my synchronization network?

Once answered, objectives need to be set:

The number of frame slips per day/month/year to be allowed under impaired network conditions

The timing sources available from the carrier or local telephone company to help solve the problem

The degree of redundancy required

The locations of the timing systems, and the Stratum levels desired

The management and maintenance of the system

The technical staff at Larus is available to assist users in defining an efficient, cost effective, and expandable timing synchronization system for private networks. Call Larus for technical assistance at (408) 573-2700.
