CXR/Larus Announces New DUC GPS Antenna Extender Kit

Increases maximum Timing System GPS cable length
to 1500 ft while using inexpensive RG58 Coax

San Jose, Calif., October 3, 2005 CXR/Larus, a leading manufacturer of network timing, test and access solutions today announced the latest addition to the industry standard StarClockTM and StarSyncTM product families, the DUC (Down/UpConverter) GPS Antenna Extender Kit, part number 007-02319-004. This kit, utilizing innovative patented technology, greatly increases the allowable length of inexpensive generic RG58 type coax which is typically utilized in L1 GPS based synchronization and timing system installations.

L1 frequency GPS Signal up/down conversion is required when signal losses in the antenna cable exceed the receive threshold of the timing system's GPS receiver, and utilizing large diameter coaxial runs to keep the losses to acceptable levels are sometimes a very expensive solution. Typically, when cable distances exceed 50 feet (16 m), the generic RG58 type coax which comes with the GPS antenna kits is replaced in the installation with more expensive RG213 type coax. When cable distances exceed 250 feet (76 m), special large diameter low loss coaxial cable is generally called for. This cable can be very expensive, and also may create many installation headaches, such as dealing with the bend radii and the special connectorization requirements of large cables. In-line amplifiers, another common way to extend the reach of the GPS signal, can sometimes introduce noise into the system, compromising signal quality. The CXR/Larus DUC GPS Antenna Extender is the perfect solution to these problems, providing both installation and cost benefits. The longer the coax run required for an installation, the more these cost savings add up.

The CXR/Larus DUC GPS Antenna Extender consists of a downconverter at the GPS antenna and an upconverter at the GPS input of the timing system. Patented technology phase locks the converter pair to provide high quality signal transport. This technique uses the same reference for both up and down conversion, which eliminates frequency error.

Included as part of the kit are a special combination antenna/downconverter, an upconverter module, power supply, 25 feet of connectorized cable to connect between the upconverter module and the timing system GPS input, a mounting bracket with hardware, and up to 1500 feet of RG58 cable and connectors to connect the downconverter/antenna and the upconverter module.
